Don't tell Melanie Grubman that altruistic caped crusaders are found only in comic books or on the big screen. For the past five years, the 28-year-old has biked through cities small and large as part of a service group called the Superheroes, which was founded in 2000 by Oregonian--and former Marvel comics artist--Ethan Hughes, and now has about 200 members, riding from project to project all over the world. "My most recent ride took place in Ireland last September," says Grubman, an education director at a sustainable-living and transportation partnership in Oakland, California. "We picked up 50 bags of litter, did a rap show at an elementary school and helped some Brigidine nuns clean out a well."Link
This is the most jaw-droppingly awesome thing I've ever seen on YouTube.
Here's some great footage and commentary on a high-speed chase situation. Do not try this yourself... unless you have to. It reminds me of an article I read (maybe in an old Network News?) about some filmmakers who were reshooting famous chase scenes in movies, but replacing the motor vehicles with bicycles. Explosions and all.
